What Is the Skilled Worker Visa Going Rate?

The going rate is the Home Office’s occupation-specific salary benchmark for Skilled Worker visa roles.

Employers must pay the higher of:

  • the minimum salary threshold, and
  • the required percentage of the going rate for the job.

Each role is tied to a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC 2020) code and has its own annual and hourly rate.

These figures are normally based on a 37.5-hour week, but exceptions include:

  • Doctors (40 hours)
  • Teachers in England (32.5 hours)
  • NHS jobs (Agenda for Change hours)

If the sponsored worker’s hours differ, you must pro-rate the going rate.

Skilled Worker Minimum Salary Rules in 2025

From 22 July 2025, the following thresholds apply:

Table 1 roles (Options A–E)

  • Option A (Standard): £41,700 + 100% of going rate
  • Option B (PhD non-STEM): £37,500 + 90% of going rate
  • Option C (PhD STEM): £33,400 + 80% of going rate
  • Option D (Immigration Salary List): £33,400 + 100% of going rate
  • Option E (New entrant): £33,400 + 70% of going rate

Hourly rate must meet at least £17.13 (based on up to 48 hours).

Table 2 roles (Health & Care, transitional RQF 3–5, Options F–J):

  • Option F (Standard): £31,300 + 100% of going rate
  • Option G: £28,200 + 90% of going rate
  • Options H–J: £25,000 + 70–80% of going rate

Skilled Worker Going Rates 2025

The Home Office updates going rates each year, based on the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE). The July 2025 figures are now in force.

Automate Home Office Audits with Borderless

The Borderless platform provides a centralized system for all sponsorships, automating reminders for key tasks and ensuring best practices across your organization, simplifying audit preparation and ongoing compliance.

How Employers Should Apply the Going Rate

  1. Identify the right SOC code using the ONS tool in the Sponsor Management System (SMS).
  2. Check the latest Appendix Skilled Occupations on GOV.UK — always download a dated copy.
  3. Compare thresholds: cash floor vs % of going rate. Pay whichever is higher.
  4. Exclude allowances: only guaranteed PAYE salary counts.
  5. Adjust for hours: pro-rate against the role’s standard working week.
  6. Keep evidence: SOC selection, salary calculations, CoS, and contracts for audits.

Skilled Worker Going Rate FAQs

What is the going rate?
The official Home Office salary benchmark for each skilled role.

Do part-time workers qualify?
Yes — but salaries are pro-rated, and the annual threshold must still be met in full.

Can bonuses or allowances count?
No — only guaranteed basic pay.

Are NHS roles different?
Yes, they use national pay scales, but visa thresholds still apply.

Where do I find the latest going rates?
On GOV.UK under Appendix Skilled Occupations.

👉 For more definitions, check our immigration glossary.

Conclusion

The Skilled Worker going rate is central to compliance. If salaries fall short, the visa will be refused, and sponsors risk Home Office enforcement.

At Borderless, we help employers calculate going rates, assign Certificates of Sponsorship correctly, and protect sponsor licences.
