If you hold a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or have transitioned to a digital eVisa, it’s your legal responsibility to keep your contact details up to date with the UK Home Office. This includes reporting any change of address promptly to ensure your immigration record remains accurate.
Failing to do so could result in missed communications, delayed decisions, or even visa curtailment.
In this guide, we’ll explain:
- How to report a change of address if you have a BRP
- How to update your address if you’ve transitioned to an eVisa
- What to do if you’ve had other changes in circumstances
- The risks of non-compliance
What’s the Difference Between a BRP and an eVisa?
A BRP is a physical card issued to foreign nationals living in the UK. It contains key information such as your visa type, expiry date, and biometric data.
As of 2025, the UK government is phasing out BRPs in favour of eVisas — a digital record of your immigration status accessible through your UKVI account. Most new visa holders will now receive an eVisa, not a BRP.
If You Have a BRP: How to Change Your Address
To update your address as a BRP holder:
- Go to the Home Office online form
- Provide your BRP number, previous and current addresses, and identity details
- Submit the form and await confirmation (there is no fee for this)
If You Have an eVisa: Update Through Your UKVI Account
For eVisa holders, the process is faster and done entirely online.
Steps to update:
- Log into your UKVI account
- Navigate to “update personal details”
- Enter your new address
- Submit and wait for confirmation
You will receive a confirmation email once the change has been processed. No proof of address is required.
Other Changes You Must Report to the Home Office
You are also required to report:
- Change of name or nationality
- New phone number or email
- Separation from a partner
- Changes in children’s living arrangements
- Criminal convictions
- Change of legal representative
Some changes can be updated via your UKVI account. Others must be reported using the MCC form.
Using the MCC Form
For changes that cannot be submitted online, such as:
- Criminal convictions
- Relationship breakdowns
- Dependents moving out
You must use the Migrant Change of Circumstances (MCC) form, available on gov.uk. Print it, complete it, and post it with supporting documents to the address provided on the form.
What Happens If You Don’t Update Your Address?
Not reporting a change of address can lead to serious consequences:
- Missing important updates or correspondence
- Delays or refusals of pending applications
- Potential visa curtailment
- Fines for non-compliance
It’s crucial to keep your records accurate to protect your immigration status.
